Preparing for Presentations (and other stressful things)
Standing and speaking in front of a group can be nerve-wracking. There is a normal amount of excitement and anticipation of a presentation. Then there is real anxiety that can have a negative impact on the presentation and your health. Breath and movement can help.
Start by focusing on where you may be feeling the tension in your body. Bring a little movement to where you feel tight, usually the back, neck, and shoulders. A few shoulder roller or stretches can help.
Then use your breath to refocus your mind and ease your body. Pursed lipped breath is a very simple technique you can use. Inhale through the nose and exhale through pursed lips nice and slow. This can immediately bring down the level of stress by a notch or two.
It comes down to getting comfortable in your own skin. You want your words to reach your audience in a clear and comfortable way as possible. Try establishing a different relationship with being in front of an audience.
Think of your presentation as a way of sharing what you know so that it becomes a little less stressful. Find a way to connect with your audience. As you become curious about what motivates them. You can start with what is motivating you. Even if it is an assigned presentation, what are you trying to make your audience aware of? Let go of the need to be an expert. This will take a lot of the weight off of you and allow the audience to relate to you more.
When you have finished give yourself time to decompress. If possible, do not judge yourself or compare yourself to others. This is all part of accepting that we each contribute in our own unique way. Keep the purpose in perspective. If you have gotten the information needed across to the group you have succeeded. Self-judgment is never a good idea.
Mindfulness and stress relieving techniques can help you deal with any stressful situations.
